Moving Essentials

Moving Essentials

It’s moving day! There are a ton of moving pieces (besides the mountains of boxes) that go into this transition; here are a few you need to keep in mind as you make your move!

First Things First (things you can do from your laptop at the coffee shop on your new side of town)

• File a change of address with USPS and the IRS

• Change your address for all of your creditors and bank accounts

• Notify your employer of your change of address

• Notify your doctors of your change of address

• Update your license, registration and voter card

• Alert your internet/cable company/utilities

• Ask a neighbor or call the city to find your garbage collection day

Next (things to do once your boots are on the ground):

• If you haven’t done so, find out where your gas and water meters are located

• Clean all vents and air ducts

• Develop a family escape plan in case of emergency

• Put together a first aid kit

• Find important documents and keep them in a safe place (checkbook, passports, birth certificates, social security cards)

• Get a fire extinguisher/flashlights

And last, but not least, sit back, relax, and enjoy your new home. You’ve worked hard to get here.
